Default New bottle for the Genie?

According to Scott Lucas on his great blog Enduring America (The Latest from Iran (18 July): A Victory Followed By…..? | Enduring America) Rafsanjani's speech created in Tehran "excitement, even euphoria. Immediate interpretations proclaimed the former President’s call for all detainees to be released, on his criticism of the Guardian Council’s supervision of elections, and on his upholding of the right — even the duty — to protest. That euphoria has continued this morning."

But Lucas warns that the untangling of the growing complexity of the situation takes time. "It’s just a reminder, in an Iran of “gradual revolution”, of marathon not sprint." His solution to the case:
"For me, the possible answer lies not in immediate proposals but new formations to “channel” demands. Almost overtaken, by the Friday prayers and the powerful figure of Rafsanjani, was the news of a possible “political front” involving Mir Hossein Mousavi. That development, if allowed by the regime, would put the Movement back into the “ordinary” day-to-day of politics."

In other words: create a new bottle for the Genie... Or is Fintan Dunne right with his remark on this forum: The Genie is not only out of the bottle. The Genie has smashed the bottle and has no intention of ever returning to it.

Judging by the first reaction on Lucas' (excellent) analysis it looks like Fintan is on the winning hand.

Of course Fintan is right. Many Iranians are becoming Netizens first and Iranians second.

I think you're wrong there. Iran will always come first. But Iran is not ahamadinajad's personal playground. It is free.

If they want to make "new channels" then they can start first by letting the prisoners go, and no more arrests or beating people or trashing their homes, cars, and bodies merely for wearing a strip of green wrapped around their finger. Until they relent and do this, it never ends. This is the way it is.

The longer it takes them, and the more crimes against Iran they commit, the more they will have to pay for when it is over. They cannot win. It is just a matter of time. They may as well minimize the bill they will have to pay now, and stop the treason they are doing. No moe killing Iranians. No more blood.

Yes I could be wrong, but if the issue was thoroughly analyzed to see where people's priorities really were, we may find that people's personal beliefs or core values don't correspond very well with those of their country.

Well how else can they convert peaceful protests under the Constitution into lawless hooliganism and violence?

I think many of them are actually fighting for their lives and their own freedom. If they lose power they could be at great risk.
