Another good read:
The Man in the Shadow: Mojtaba Khamenei – Tehran Bureau

A response to the Guardian article:
[I don't trust this site!] UPDATED Iran: A Counter-coup against the Supreme Leader’s Son Mojtaba? | Enduring America

What started all of this was:
پيک نت peiknet

Here is the translated version:
Leadership Council
Discussed among the experts is

While this news is being released, it is being said that one of the motivation of the recent electoral coup was the intensification of lung cancer of the leader and his son "Mojtaba" trying to hold his father's power, so that afterward he could take over and do not allow an independent President which is separated from the Leader to be in power.

All bits of experience from the fate of Ahmad Khomeini and Ayatollah Khomeini has played arole in shaping recent electoral coup. This means to determine the successor leader, before the leader has died! Conjecture is called, part of the Mir-Hossein Mousavi letter refers to
"We are not arguing over presidency of republic and recent election, but it is about choosing a method of governing!" he could be referring to the same problem. It means turning the Republic into the Kingdom or that the Islamic government that is a religious kingdom!

News site "Roye" that reports news about the attack and religious centers of Qom Seminary is published in the latest claims were sent to:

Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, head of the Assembly of Experts, has met with some Qom imitation authorities [spiritual clergy] and the representative plenipotentiary of Ayatollah Sistani.
He is his meeting with the Qom imitation authorities [spiritual clergy], reminisced over memories of the early revolutionary day, and the ways problems where solved by Ayatollah Khomeini's Islamic leadership.
The same site, quoted the source again and added, it seems that half of the representatives of the Assembly of Experts is leaning toward forming a "Leadership Council"

Same source added: What we can say about the conclusion of these meetings is that the only rational solution to current situation is resignation of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Islamic leader is the father [figure] and leader of all people and not specific ones. However it seems that he (Ali Khamenei) prefers to be father [figure] and leader of the specific ones.
In response to a question from "Roya" reporter about whether the session of Assembly of Experts is formed in Qom, he said "Please allow me to beexempt from answering that question for now. Be sure that, soon the information about the session will be announced to the public"

Original article on the site "Roya" you can be seen here! رویه خبر - دیدار رفسنجانی با بعضی از مراجع قم صورت گرفت

This news is published while it is being said that one of the motives for the electoral coup is the intensification of leader's lung cancer and his son "Mojtaba" with this electoral coup was trying to keep the power in his father's hand, so that an independent president would not take the steering wheel away from the leader.

Every bit of experience from Ayatollah Khomeini and destiny of Ahmad Khomeini have played a role in shaping the electoral coup. This means choosing the successor of the leader, before the leader passes away.

It's speculation that, in part of the Mir-Hossein Mousavi letter, he points out, the debate is not about presidency and recent elections, but its about the institutionalization of a method of government! that can be infer of turning the Islamic Republic into the Kingdom or the Islamic government that is a kind of religious kingdom!

All the claims about Mojtaba Khamanei are based on speculation. There are barely 4 photos of the guy in existence, and no one making any of these claims has ever even talked to him.

Putting aside the Green movement, even the regime loyalists would not accept him for the very reason that he is unknown, and holds little rank.

It is quite possible he is involved in power moves regarding basij or IRGC, but he would/could never become the leader after Khamenei.

All my assertions based on my knowledge and speculation as well.

Who needs to be the declared leader, when you are the leader in fact?

Khamenei lets his son do whatever he wants. And his son is a monster.

Sounds pretty much like Saddam and his boys then doesn't it?!

Can you cite any good verifiable examples of what he has done?

For starters he is in command of the Basiji.
And while the regular police seems to act in a more or less civilized way, the Basiji definitely don't.

I wouldn't compare him to Saddam's sons, though. His elder son was a sadistic psychopath, Mojtaba is simply a greedy criminal.

That is all based on hearsay though. That doesn't completely negate the possibility, but we have to recognize that a lot of things and positions have been ascribed to him, and none of them have been verified through reliable sources. We also shouldn't underestimate the rumor mills among our people.

Journalism is not Criminal Procedure, Mr Unreg. If it were, then everything we read in the news would be hearsay, wouldn't it? But it's not hearsay, its journalism.

If you are questioning the sources of the information or if you are questioning the information itself, then the simple thing to do is to just say so.
