As with others, I am skeptical of the trashed ballots story . . . but there are plenty of other reasons to suspect that the Iranian government has not been forthright about the election results, and certainly they have no right to harass peaceful protesters.

On the other hand, the reports of deaths have been relatively low, so it seems at least some in the government are trying to keep things peaceful. That means that the chief reason to be suspicious is the media blackout - but that is a pretty big reason.

As for theories about the CIA being involved . . . perhaps they are in some small way, but they are not as competent as their opponents claim. It is doubtful they could do this good a job. From the little information that is emerging so far, it looks homegrown to me.
