Default AN Friday Prayers

EA are running (amusing) live updates from AN Friday prayers:

These acts tried to discredit the Presidential vote, “a matter of genuine democracy unlike other staged elections in the world, where the outcome is predetermined”..

0840 GMT: Oh, yes, Ahmadinejad also asked Parliament to show their trust with votes of confidence in his “strong, coherent, professional, and honest” Ministers.

Iranian president: Prosecute opposition leaders

ALI AKBAR DAREINI
The Associated Press

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's president Friday called for the prosecution of opposition leaders over the postelection turmoil, saying that senior activists currently on trial should not be the only ones punished.

The call from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stepped up the pressure against reformers in the ongoing unrest that has gripped the country following the June 12 presidential election and proven the strongest challenge to the cleric-led regime since its 1979 inception.

"Serious confrontation has to be against the leaders and key elements, against those who organized and provoked (the riots) and carried out the enemy's plan. They have to be dealt with seriously," Ahmadinejad told a crowd of thousands in the capital Tehran before Friday prayers.

The president said prominent activists who are currently standing trial have to be treated with "Islamic mercy," portraying them as "deceived" into taking part in the unrest.

"These deceived and second-hand elements have to be dealt with Islamic mercy. Don't give immunity and protection to the main elements and punish the deceived and second-hand elements," he said.

[...]

Ahmadinejad did not specifically name the opposition leaders. However, many hard-liners and members of the Revolutionary Guard have publicly called for the arrest of defeated presidential candidates Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi as well as former president Mohammad Khatami.

Ahmadinejad also admitted for the first time that detained protesters were abused in custody but also denied any government involvement, claiming instead that it was the work of Iran's enemies and the opposition.

"These actions that were carried out in custody ... were part of the enemy's scenario," he said. "Security, military and intelligence forces are free from these shameful acts."

President Ahmadinejad then called on officials to bring to justice the architects of the post-election unrest.

"I call upon security and judicial officials to decisively and mercilessly act with those who committed inhumane acts in the guise of the friends [of the establishment] since they inflicted damage on people and tarnished the image of the establishment, security and police forces."

He then called on authorities to administer justice and firmly deal with those who "orchestrated and provoked" the unrest and instead treat those deceived in the course of the election with 'Islamic compassion'.

This is the dumbest thing he's done so far. And he has done a lot of stupid things.

Default Question

Ahmadinejad urges punishment for unrest architects-

Does this mean, he wants to punish himself?

Well he hasn't said he will do anything.
He's just calling out for someone else to do the punishing.

So if he's the one who should be punished....

Oh great.
First peaches and now S&M.

So, does this mean that he is saying the basiji and prison guards are evil Zionists and American agents?

I can see a purge inside the basiji's own ranks coming up now. They'll need scapegoats that they can accuse of being part of the opposition, to make it look good. So they're going to start picking out sucker basiji who thought they were just following orders, and then they'll accuse them of being with the opposition, and start imprisoning or executing them, too.

They deserve it. Fuckers knew what they were doing was wrong. Now they will become sacrificial lambs at the hands of the ones they were taking orders from.

No sympathy for them. And the ones that plan to scapegoat to them will lie and pretend to be their friends right up until the very last moment, too, because they won't want them to suspect and turn on them. Unlike normal people, they are armed. So they ones planning to arrest them will use deceit to keep them unaware until they arrest them.

If I were a basiji, I'd be very, very paranoid right now.

What makes you so sure they'll punish the ones who did follow orders?
I think it might be more likely they punish the guys who refused to do the bad stuff.
And then blame them for the things that the nasty loyal and really sick basiji did.
But I hope I'm wrong.

I'm assuming this was said at the prayers.
It seems to match some of what was in the first post.

Britain thought Iran's time was 'up'

Quote:
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says that Britain's foreign secretary had predicted the demise of the Iranian state in the aftermath of the June presidential election.

"One of the foreign ministers of friendly countries told us that when I asked the Old Colonialism's (United Kingdom) foreign secretary why they interfered in Iran's affairs, he answered that 'this time the time was up for the Islamic Republic system, and this time we have worked out everything'," Ahmadinejad said Friday.

"The whole world knows that in Iran, elections are fundamental maters, and, contrary to common democracies of the world, they are not a sham or previously arranged, but, with the presence and supervision of the people,"
he added. "It is a necessity for the continuation of the revolutionary and Islamic values."

"This election shattered the enemies' plots and revealed their plans, and well illustrated the firmness of the system," said Ahmadinejad, who is embarking on his second four-year term, Fars News Agency reported.

He went on to say that the hope of the enemy "was to direct and steer to victory, [their plans] to finish off Iran, in the same way that they could in other places, through color revolutions, with money, various media and expertise."

"But, during the election, our nation slapped their faces in such a way, that, after more than two months since the election, they are still dizzy, and have lost their way home," Ahmadinejad exclaimed....
