Default Courage in Iran - Times editorial

Qods Day was so important in showing the world that the reform movement is not only not dead (as some like The Guardian would have it), but just as strong and angry as ever. This Times Leader today (Saturday) sums up what an important impression Friday's events have made on the world. I hope President Obama reads his papers Saturday.

Quote:
The thousands of Iranians who took to the streets yesterday to protest against the fraudulent re-election of President Ahmadinejad and the growing repression throughout Iran showed extraordinary courage. ... It was especially brave of the demonstrators to take to the streets yesterday, a major political occasion for the Government when it flaunts its anti-Israeli credentials by commemorating Quds (Jerusalem) Day. ...

Beyond giving vigorous moral support and publicity to those determined to resist the new dictatorship, the West has found it hard to influence politics within Iran. ... There is one place, however, where the West can protest and where its voice will be heard in Iran. Mr Ahmadinejad is to address the United Nations General Assembly. His visit cannot be stopped: a visa is automatic for any head of state visiting the UN. But his visit can certainly be disrupted by protest. Anyone who cares about democracy, who is appalled by the repression, the cruelty and the human rights violations of the present regime, can make their disgust plain on the streets of New York. The cameras will be rolling. The word will get back to Iran. Those brave protesters will know that they are not alone. Fellow Muslims around the world can see what is being done in their name. It is a sacrilegious obscenity.

Dueling marches pit Iran hardliners vs. reformers
By NASSER KARIMI , 09.18.09, 06:03 PM EDT

TEHRAN, Iran -- Tens of thousands of protesters - many decked out in the green colors of the reform movement and chanting "Death to the dictator!" - rallied Friday in defiance of Iran's Islamic leadership, clashing with police and confronting state-run anti-Israel rallies.

In the first major opposition protests in two months, demonstrators marching shoulder-to-shoulder raised their hands in V-for-victory signs on main boulevards and squares throughout the capital.

Lines of police, security forces and plainclothes Basij militiamen kept the two sides apart in most cases. At times they waded into the protesters with baton charges and tear gas volleys. The demonstrators responded by throwing stones and bricks, and setting tires ablaze.

Hard-liners attacked two senior opposition leaders who joined the protests. Former pro-reform President Mohamad Khatami was shoved and jostled, gripping his black turban to keep it from being knocked off as supporters rushed in to protect him, pushing away the attackers and hustling him away.

The protests were a significant show of defiance after supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei explicitly banned anti-government marches on Quds Day, an annual memorial created by Iran's Islamic Republic to show support for the Palestinians and denounce Israel. Quds is Arabic for Jerusalem

Tens of thousands of people marched in Tehran and other major Iranian cities Friday as demonstrators turned an annual anti-Israel event into a new protest against the Islamic government.

Witnesses and videos posted on the Internet and broadcast by foreign television showed clashes between security forces and protesters chanting "No Gaza, no Lebanon: my life only for Iran" and "death to the dictator."

This is the interview with tehrani journalist. From Radio Free Europe:

Quote:
Tehran Journalist: The main demonstration by the Green movement started at the Hafte Tir square. The crowd was scattered [at first]. Later, the number of the people carrying green flags and wearing green wristbands grew to about 100,000. They moved toward the Vali Asr square until they reached Karimkhan. There was a huge crowd. Police forces were deployed there, but they were standing and doing nothing. They just tried twice to stop the crowd from moving further. But there were many people. The police did not beat them and people could continue moving forward.

RFE/RL: What were some of the slogans that you heard people chanting?

Journalist: When we reached the Vali Asr square, speakers were chanting from the official tribunes: "Death to Israel." People would chant back: "Death to Russia." It was so [bad] that they were forced to become silent and there were no more "Death to Israel" chants. Another chant was "Death to the Dictator, be it a Zionist or Doctor" [Mahmud Ahmadinejad is being called "Doctor" by his supporters].

When [reformist cleric] Mehdi Karrubi appeared, people chanted: "Karrubi the idol breaker! Destroy the main idol." [They shouted:] "No to Gaza" and "No to Lebanon." Another chant was: "My life belongs to Iran." Many were chanting: "Coup government, Resign, Resign" and "Death to the Dictator."

Good article (or rather compilation of tweets) from Pahamas media.

Quote:
I am full of admiration for the dissidents, and furious and ashamed that my government is still unwilling to embrace their cause. The dissidents face torture and death, but are unafraid. My modern Chamberlains face nothing but the loss of the chance to sit down at a negotiating table with a group of monsters, but the Chamberlains are afraid to support freedom. The Iranian dissidents submit their bodies to torture and death, while the Chamberlains withhold their voices.

And so they have become accomplices to evil.

UPDATE: In case you thought the Iranians had lost their wit, as the sun rose in Tehran, this tweet appeared: ” OMG they have sun in Iran? They forgot to filter the sun ?”
