He doesn't want to make a public announcement agianst either the demonstrators or the dictatpr. However in private I'm pretty much sure he wants democracy re-established in Iran

Scott Lucas has a good piece on this over on Enduring America, a very good read.

The Iran Cul-de-Sac: 4 Points on Obama’s Embrace of Ahmadinejad (and Rejection of the Green Movement)
1) IT’S THE NUKES
2) GETTING THE GREEN MOVEMENT WRONG
3) THE MYTH OF THE PLAN B: SANCTIONS
4) NO OTHER REAL ALTERNATIVES FOR OBAMA: And the US President will be back in the cul-de-sac: pressed by some advisors and a lot o...f Congressmen to pursue sanctions which offer no remedy for — and no exit from — the political dilemma of his failed engagement.

Obama is in a tough spot. There's nothing he can do to help the opposition, only ways to hurt it. Sounds like if he keeps his mouth shut, it's better for the opposition. If the nuclear deal weren't so dire (in terms of getting Israel to not start a regional war), he'd probably just ignore the regime like past presidents. But he has to try to strike a deal, which will probably fail anyway, but that would keep Israel at bay long enough to see if this regime can be toppled from within and not with any U.S. interference.

That's how I see it at least.

Do these people still not get that the Iranian Dictatorship desperately wants a scapegoat for these protests?

If we announce support Iran will most claim that the US must be giving them supplies and put the nation under direct martial law to "hunt down" the 'spies' in the country.

While there are many convincing arguments for and against president Obama fully supporting the green movement, that should not stop the citizens of the world from saying that what the regime is doing is a crime. The green revolution will not be won by the US government interfering but by the citizens of Iran with the full support of the people of the world saying "enough is enough". While the security forces are just taking orders right now, many of them will have to deal with their conscience and realize they're beating and torturing their neighbors and friends. I predict a huge defection of security forces in the future.
