The numbers are the key. The greater the numbers, the safer they will be. As long as the protesters numbers dramatically overwhelm the numbers of security forces, those forces that ARE there will be afraid to get tough. They have already seen what happen under those circumstances.

Remember, for the most part those still defending the regime are cowards and fools, or those hired from other places like Lebanon (hezbollah) where they have no personal interest in the results.
