The on line poll has 950+ signatures, Australia has about 2,000 Scilons, that should be good for something.

One thing to take into account.

Yes, religion's ex members sometimes have disgruntled stories to tell.

Yes, if there's been an incident of abuse, then you usually get several members who can all say they were abused by the same person at the same location at more or less the same time period.

But with Scientology, there's little connection. It's many separate incidents, all over the world, at different times, connected with different people/procedures.

That doesn't show that there is one particular failing. It shows a widespread, systematic, variety of abuses that are rotten right to the core of the organisation.

What's even worse is that, in almost all cases involving CoS, it can be proven that the individuals responsible were actually following documented church policy/doctrine - rather than a rogue individual acting alone.

That, I believe, makes it clearly indicative of the organisation and its practices being at fault and worthy of investigation, rather than individuals as is usually the case.

Yes this is a very important point.
  6. Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

Got an e-mail reply saying 'the greens' will be supporting the enquiry. Sorry if this has already been posted, in a bit of a rush.

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

So we should concentrate on harpooning the Labour senators?
  8. Olrik Member

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

I suppose this "coalition" is the minority, and if the Labor supports Xenophon it will pass ?
  9. _You_ Member

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

Actually according to Wikipedia, in the Senate the Coalition (Liberal Party and National Party) has more Senators than the Labor Party.

    Every vote matters

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

How is it going? On the Parliament stream I can only hear some chillout music :(

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

For there to be a majority - if labor supports the inquiry you'll need ALL non-major senators to support it also.

This means STEVE FIELDING of FAMILY FIRST (in addition to Xenophon and the Greens who are obviously supporting the inquiry).

    senator.fielding@aph.gov.au
  12. _You_ Member

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

    Thats a good point.

Family First members would probably oppose the coerced abortions in Scientology's Sea Org as well as the enforced destruction of families by Scientology's Disconnection policy.

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

But fundamentally be caught up in the 'cant tax a religion' angle. So 'poon Senator Feilding specifically pointing out that EVEN if the lower levels hold to some sort of 'religious belief', that Organised Scientology is still a CRIMINAL organisation.

Or something else true and suitably relevant to his beliefs - but read this: Steve Fielding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Then send a personalised email.

It sounds like we have a good chance of getting Labour on board (if everyone keeps up the pressure and information flow to them), but we need this guy too.

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

Yep - This dude is technically aligned with the right - and I tend to disagree with a lot of his policy positions - however he IS genuine and does actually give a crap. I don't doubt his sincerity in terms of doing what he thinks is right.

The plight of children born into Scientology may have particular gravity considering his recent revelations (prompted by the national apology to the Forgotten Australians) that he was sexually abused by a scoutmaster in his youth.

I think the point that this is about stopping AND preventing the abuse (obviously not just sexual abuse - but of any kind) that's occurring RIGHT NOW in the Church of Scientology, should be paramount in our communications with Fielding.

Seriously - this dude can be frustrating to listen to (especially on ETS legislation) - but he has a heart and will kick up a fuss if he cares about an issue.

Edit: Oh and coerced abortions is something he'd definitely be pretty disturbed by.

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

If the major parties vote as a bloc, then we only need one of them to support us, in addition to the Greens.
  17. _You_ Member

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

    So majority is 39 - we have 6 - need another 33

Labour alone brings 32 - not sufficient. Who's the 'country liberal' Senator?
  18. El Diablo Member

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

In terms of liberals who might be worth focusing on: Senator Judith Troeth

She crossed the floor on the issue of temporary protection visas
(as, along with labor and the greens - she felt they were inhumane and a poor reflection of our humanitarian values) - reaffirming her objection when Turnbull recently put forward "safe-haven" visas (basically TVPs with a new name) as official opposition policy.

    Answering my own question:
CLP Nigel Scullion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

CLP (1) are in coalition with National (4) and Liberal (32) = (37)

    For those focussing their emails:

CLP and National are more Rural
    Liberal is more Urban

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

    Nigel Scullian

Parliament of Australia:Senate:Senators:Homepages by Political Party

Also, over here there tends to be more "voting along party lines" than say in the US - and the Coalition = Liberal, Country Liberals & Nationals (at the federal level they are more-or-less a single party - and these sub-parties are like internal factions)

Edit: Yep, what the above poster said.

Crossing the floor: Political Hero or Renegade? Law Institute of Victoria address > Senator Barnaby Joyce > Public Speeches

This National Party (coalition) senator has given a speech on the importance of concience over political allegiance

    Could be worth talking to...

    senator.joyce@aph.gov.au

What could be more harmless than dissenting to support a Senate Investigation to better inform the Senators of the factual truth?
  28. _You_ Member

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

^^^yep Barnaby Joyce has a tendency to vote according to his actual views. Note that he is the guy who said to the media that he didn't know much about Scientology except for aliens and Johnny Travolta... Make sure he is well informed before the vote!

Got my first auto-reply from the Minister of Defence's office, kinda appropriate considering the recent suicide and ensuing fuckery by cult of army dude.

'Poon 'em all I say! I think sending to the one's who aren't supporting Senator Xenophon is especially important.

    Rock on Anons!

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

Good point. There is also "SUPPRESSIVE ACTS," from which one understand that good standing Scientologists can't report to authorities, as per policy, since this would put Scientology in disrepute:

So you can't trust Scientologists to cooperate with authorities, as per their own religious scriptures, since that would "impede Scientology or Scientologists." That's also why Edward McBride's files was rendered unavailable.
  38. Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

Any chance we can get all the names of those still undecided/in the party that has decided against? It'd be easier for us to target e-mails at the seperate groups that way.

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

    Strategy and Irony:

I'm a total political junkie and left of centre politically but listen to this:

The opposition might be the best source for votes

    BUT

Right-wing senators could vote for this too!!!

    Why?

Australian senators (unlike legislators in some european countries) can vote differently than their party and they might because:

    1. if this cause becomes popular they want to be on board

    and

    2. right wingers love traditional families and scientologists break them up and

    3. for those really right-wing our-country-should-be-christian guys scientology is a threat to that

    adjust your letters accordingly
