    Here's my letter:

    Dear Senator _____,

I hope you will support Senator Nick Xenophon's call for a parliamentary inquiry into the Scientology organisation's criminal practices. Here are a few quotes about Scientology that you may find helpful in making your decision.

    Thank you very much.

    Best wishes,

    [me]

    =================
Justice Anderson, Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia:

"Scientology is evil; its techniques are evil; its practice is a serious threat to the community, medically, morally, and socially; and its adherents are sadly deluded and often mentally ill... (Scientology is) the world's largest organization of unqualified persons engaged in the practice of dangerous techniques which masquerade as mental therapy."

Justice Brookings, Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia:

" ...the teaching of Scientology and the practice of Scientology will result in the commission of many offenses and may well result in the commission of many others."

Kenneth Robinson, British Minister of Health:

"The government is satisfied that Scientology is socially harmful. It alienates members of families from each other and attributes squalid and disgraceful motives to all who oppose it; its authoritarian principles and practice are a potential menace to the personality and well being of those so deluded as to become followers; above all, its methods can be a serious danger to the health of those who submit to them... There is no power under existing law to prohibit the practice of Scientology; but the government has concluded that it is so objectionable that it would be right to take all steps within its power to curb its growth."

Justice Latey, ruling in the High Court of London:

"Scientology is both immoral and socially obnoxious...It is corrupt sinister and dangerous. It is corrupt because it is based on lies and deceit and has its real objective money and power for Mr. Hubbard... It is sinister because it indulges in infamous practices both to its adherents who do not toe the line unquestionably and to those who criticize it or oppose it. It is dangerous because it is out to capture people and to indoctrinate and brainwash them so they become the unquestioning captives and tools of the cult, withdrawn from ordinary thought, living, and relationships with others."

Judge Breckenridge, Los Angeles Superior Court:

"[The court record is] replete with evidence [that Scientology] is nothing in reality but a vast enterprise to extract the maximum amount of money from its adepts by pseudo scientific theories... and to exercise a kind of blackmail against persons who do not wish to continue with their sect....In addition to violating and abusing its own members' civil rights, the organization over the years with its 'fair game' doctrine has harassed and abused those persons not in the church whom it perceives as enemies."

Senator Nicholas Xenophon addressing the Australian Senate, November 17, 2009

"Ultimately, this is not about religious freedom. In Australia there are no limits on what you can believe. But there are limits on how you can behave. It is called the law, and no-one is above it."

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

Given all the climate carry-on, there maybe a small chance that the Senate might sit another week.

The govt wants to get it through today, the opposition say more time is required.

The govt doesn't want to extend the season, the opposition has said it should.

So if/when it seems it won't get through today, the govt may change it's position. And the senate might sit again next week. I think this is unlikely (and I have no idea what the rules are about letting such a thing happen)

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

Red was right... at the moment, if the climate carry-on isn't concluded today, they will apparently sit tomorrow.
  18. Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

I don't think that's really a valid argument. When you look at Western history, there has been a long a long standing history of conflict between Church and State going back to when political elites first started trying to take power away from the religious elite. It still continues today in a very subdued format. Take the recent scandals regarding the Catholic Church. They wanted to handle everything internally and were very resistant to allowing law enforcement to get involved.

They even denied abuses in a couple of cases. Even though the perpetrators had already admitted to it.

Re: Senate Vote - Delayed for a few days

The RED for today shows only two things on the Agenda

    1) Prayer
    2) Climate Bills

No opportunity for other business whatsoever - no opportunity to introduce a motion to adjust the agenda either. Nothing will happen today.

That's because it's not a full session, just a continuance of yesterday's unfinished agenda. This is thursday: part 2 the revenge.

They're debating climate legislation ammendments proposed by our boy Xenophon this morning. He's been a busy boy - but unfortunatley not on CoS stuff since the Liberal climate deal put everything on skids.

I like that Xenophon also asked a question about the ADHD guidelines and if they were compromised by a conflict of interest case in the USA regarding one of the referenced articles. I bet that messed with the heads of a few CCHR types in Australia. "How could this evil evil confused bigot be questioning the pharmaceutical industry's influence in psychiatry?"
