Nice. Most non-US Scientology operations are allegedly run from a house in Adelaide and the Church doesn't even own the house.

This pisses me off entirely. The cult is fraudulently avoiding taxation in the UK and the government do nothing. In a time of "austerity" we need to cut out this crap.

^ Well hopefully they will do something now, perhaps even more thorough since the authorities pretty much ignored it before. Stay optimistic of the awesomeness that is Xenophon and Australia, or sends poons to make right what you think is wrong ;)

    Telephone opening hours:

Please feel free to harpoon these mother-lovers.

Or not it's the end of the day and I can't get through. Need to find out if this is the place to report someone who's fraudulently dodging Corp Tax. They may not deal with us at all.....

What would be really awesome is if we could gather the evidence that the CoS funnels $$ to it's US mother church and related entities by using bogus management contracts and loans. I can't recall who the witnesses are about that.

Do we know for a fact that they don't pay corporation tax? I know on the accounts they state they think it's inapplicable as they're a "South Australian charity" but it seems they then go on to account for it anyway:
So that's the bit I don't get. What does it actually mean? Are they definitely not paying it despite being liable? Or is the issue that they're making profits disappear, and so are fraudulently avoiding liability for the tax (which I understand is levied on profits)?
  14. wolfyrik Member

It also mentions deffered tax, which would suggest to me that taxes which they're not paying are factored into the financial statement. I've no idea so we definitely need someone who can speak corporate legalese. In theory, they should pay Corporate tax as they are a registered business but not a registered charity. However their link to the Australian charity (if it was real) could exempt them under certain circumstances, Today Tonight seem sure that they are exempt and it would make sense. If they are exempt, then it is through fraud unless someone can also point out where a charity claim doesn't require the existence of an actual charity?

In their previous programme in June 2010 the Today Tonight crew said:
From the new show we know the SA Office of Consumer and Business Affairs has apparently gone no further than forcing COSRECI to file the audited accounts. I think the next question is, what has the HMRC Anti-Avoidance Group been doing this last 12 months?

If the Office of Fair Trading is anything to go by, fuck all.

    No.

It's more like they have a tax avoidance scheme which works.

In the UK, they say they're an Australian corporation and don't have to submit accounts here. So they don't get UK scrutiny.

In Australia, there's no charities commission, so anyone can say they're 'for charitable purposes' and get tax breask (OzAnons may be able to inform us further on this).

As with all companies in the Scientology group, money flows uphill from the national associations to the world ones. So the national ones never need to show a (or, much) profit, because of all the money they pay 'upstream'. (This is guesswork, but educated guesswork with info from ex-employees).

But COSRECI does do business, just not in AU, but they should pay still tax on that business, right?
  21. Random guy Member

It seems there needs to be a political will to get this sorted. Which means we'll have to keep doing what we do.

Scientology says however the opposite is true .. gotta love that kind of shit talk hahah

<From Today Tonight website linked above:>
€œ"I'll be meeting with the federal government later this week to brief them on this issue and to urge the government to give all cooperation, all support to the UK Government in their investigations",€ Senator Xenophon said.

    <Bryan Seymour from Today Tonight:>
For almost the fortieth time, we requested an interview with the Church of Scientology.
They refused, but supplied us with a brief written response:

My questions to Scientology (sent by email, Friday, June 18, 9:34am):

I am writing to request an interview on camera with a spokesperson for you group, to answer the following questions:

Can you please explain the nature and purpose of COSRECI (Church of Scientology Religious Education College Incorporated)?
Why is this group registered in South Australia?
Which domestic and foreign organisations are current members of COSRECI?
How many staff does COSRECI employ?
Who is the responsible office holder for COSRECI?
What is the nature of the business of COSRECI?
What is the status of COSRECI's tax obligations in Australia?
How much tax has COSRECI paid in Australia over the past decade?
Why has COSRECI not filed periodic financial accounts with South Australian regulators?
Why does the Church of Scientology (United Kingdom) operate under COSRECI?
What is COSRECI's tax obligations to the UK Government?
How much tax has COSRECI paid to the UK Government over the past ten years?

Please respond by close of business today.

    Regards,

    Bryan

Response from Scientology (Received Monday, June 21, 5:02pm):

    Dear Bryan,

With regard to your inquiry about Church of Scientology Religious Education College Inc., I saw your email to the UK Church. I have received the following response for your information which I am forwarding to you:

We don't discuss the details of our tax affairs with the media as you well know. We have lawyers and accountants who make sure that these things are properly taken care of in a correct and legal manner, and so it is with this incorporation.

Religious Education College was established in the mid 1970s. It is an association incorporated in South Australia and has corporate members comprised of Scientology churches around the world. Its activities have been exclusively in England and to some degree India, and primarily consist of operating an Advanced Scientology organization that ministers to parishioners from around the United Kingdom and overseas.

The nature of your questions regarding this incorporation seem to imply that you think there may be something untoward regarding it, however the opposite is true. South Australia was seen as a place that respected religious freedom.

The object of the corporation is expressed in its Constitution which is available in the South Australia Companies House. As with any such incorporated association, it is governed by a board of trustees.
It has a few hundred volunteers.

    Regards,

    Sei Kato
