Just in case you read the above and think some great vistory has been won then I will update you with the disappointing result that although this very senior politician "urged" local authorities not to give rates relief to the churches of Scientology, they continue to do so despite this urging. There were no instructions to stop this rates relief sent to them by their local government feeds which come through the Communities and Local Government web site and so they rightly have taken no action on this matter. It is hard to believe this was a cynical attempt to gain brief popularity before the government issued information on swingeing cuts to be announced the following week but so far it is looking that way.

This "urging" can be turned into a tangible result but only if people in the UK write to their own MPs about this matter in some numbers. This is what prompts change from within government. One such letter from a constituent to their own MP has just as much if not more effect than a mass picket.

In the London rates relief thread and I have set out some of my thoughts on this that you can use but at the end of the day, if you write to your MP, you should choose your own wording. Do not use a form letter. Include your name and your return address on the PHYSICAL letter you send in to your OWN MP.

Again, this "urging" will now only turn into a result if UK people physically write in to their OWN Member of Parliament about it, using their own wording, and do so in numbers.

    There ya go, UK Anon.

    Gentlemen, start your...uh...keyboards!

Re: UK Government urges councils to stop giving tax breaks to scientology. WINRAR!!

Yup, keyboards are in order but only hard copies should be sent to their own MPs complete with name and full return address. No form letters. It looks like central government aren't going to follow up this "urging" by Pickles but it can still be used as ammunition to be sent to local MPs. And this is the only way I can see getting a good result out of it. And once they lose their rates relief then it will just be a mopping up action left to clear them out of the UK. If 100 people wrote in to their local MP in every district then this rates relief would be gone in a short time.

No letters from outside the constituencies, please. This has to be written by constituency members to their OWN MPs. Well-intentioned outside help is not useful in this case. UK people themselves are required to walk this final mile.

I am doing the latter by seeking clarification from Communities and Local Government as to whether central government are going to follow up on Eric Pickles statement or not and am asking what they are recommending next as a course of action if central government choose to do nothing.

The current situation is unfortunate because most of the public will assume from the statement issued by Pickles that this reates relief has stopped or will stop when in fact nothiny of the sort has happened. I am not expecting much help from Communities and Local Government so would instead urger people to write in to their own MPs in their own local constuencies. You need to send in a physical copy with your name and home address on it and it must be to your own local MP.

If you look at the London Rates Relief thread you will see my thoughts on this if you are short on ideas as to what to include in this (physical hard-copy) letter to send in.

This will work if enough people write in to their MPs. Nothing will happen if not.

Somebody phone in and remind him of his "urging" on 15 Oct 2010 and that giving rates relief to bogus charities dilutes the help given to genuine charities.

Today is the day that central government announces details of local authority spending cuts. Between 10 to 20% over the next 4 years.
What's the ball park figure for the cult's rates relief over 4 years that we'll be paying for?

Also they will be annoucing the new "Localism Bill" aimed at getting communities more involved. Well that's what they are selling it on. One idea being that people will be able to demand a referendum if council tax rates are set too high and veto the rises. Interesting. How about a referendum and veto if business rates are given away to abusive criminal cults?

What is the localism bill and what does it mean for you? | Local government network | Guardian Professional

BBC News - Councils await funding cut as Localism Bill unveiled

Eric Pickles declares that the bill will give more power to councils. Funny that, considering what we've seen already from some councils like Sunderland and Westminster who defiantly give away money to cults and refuse to accept any argument against it (and prefer to be wilfully ignorant of council's experienced decisions in the very area where the cult has been the longest and where they don't get rates relief, namely East Grinstead). Also funny that those defiant councils ignored a specific and widley publicised call from central government that local councils should not be giving rates relief to bodies like the scientology cult. Not funny at all really.

    bump

the scientology cult has tax and rates exemption due to local councils granting this in the UK.

    Scientology is a Criminal Cult

    - Not a religion, not given charity status by the uk charity commission because they are seen to be of no public benefit but they are tax exempt - why?

I've got a feeling the Celebrity Centre in Westminster and the Ideal Org on 146 QVS will soon, at last, get their 100% rates reduction.

What is good is that to make further savings he will be allowing communities to run some things. I, for one, welcome the return of the London Mob to get London running properly again. They will soon have those churches of Scientology sorted out.

    from Eric Pickles blog:

    COMMENTS ARE OPEN

The Blue Blog » Putting you back in control

Today we unveiled radical new reforms that will mark an end to the hoarding of power within central government and hand control back to individuals, communities and councils.

For the first time, we will establish powerful new rights for communities, revolutionise the planning system, and give local neighbourhoods control over housing decisions.

Under Labour, central government became too big, too interfering, too controlling and too bureaucratic. But we will push power downwards and outwards to the lowest possible level.

Under Labour, council tax more than doubled. But we will freeze council tax, abolish Labour's bin taxes and give local residents new powers to veto future excessive council tax rises.

    Our plans also include:

Putting local communities in charge of the look and feel of their locality through a new system of neighbourhood planning
Freezing council tax for 2011-12 and protecting you, the taxpayer, from Labour's planned tax hikes
Giving local groups new rights to protect their local shops, pubs, libraries and leisure centres through a Community Right to Buy
Freeing councils from bureaucracy by giving them more freedoms and flexibilities to act in the best interests of their area
It's time to put local decision-making back in the hands of local people.

    Yours truly,

    Eric Pickles
Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government

Yes, PLEASE somebody do this. I won't because I am awaiting a response from Communities and Local Government but maybe somebody would like to ask how giving local authorities more control is going to drive down costs if they choose to give charitable rates relief to destructive cults in defiance of a senior member of government "urging" them not to do so. If anything, they will give them 100% rates relief instead of 80% relief if they are given the chance. This is a recipe for disaster.

Some lunatic thinks government needs enhancing in the UK. Here is what they wrote:

The trouble is, the clams might wave the pickle jars AT US since Pickles has effectively done nothing but "urge" local authorities to stop giving tax relief and they have all ignored him.

The cult is still getting tax breaks from local government in the UK. Central government still lets it happen. The British taxpayer keep paying. No change there.

RB, did the Birmingham City Council grant tax breaks to Scientology?

They did but I think it got taken away.

I don't want to give up on this point but at the same time I am no longer the person to push this forward. We need an Anon-friendly lawyer on our side to have any chance of ending the business rates relief of 280K GBP per year given to the COSRECI by the City of London Corporation. That is a hell of a lot of money. That is what is keeping them alive in the UK since 2006. If they lose that money then they will fracture after 3-5 years and would probably have collapsed in the UK after 6-7 years. We need a lawyer on our side if we want to solve the cult problem in the UK.
